Jaqueline's version: Prayer of Detachment
St. John of the Cross (1542-1591)

Intro:

Readers 1,2 and 3 are standing on center stage in a semi circle. Open position facing audience. Light focus / spot light in the center of the semi circle. Like a light shining down from heaven. Readers will be looking up at the light from time to time, talking to God and giving the impression that they would be drawn up to heaven any time.

Reader 1: O God, won't you deliver me! (Hands lifted in desperation)

Reader 3: from wanting to be loved! (Arms wrapped tightly around oneself, looking up)

Reader 2: PRAISED! (looks at audience)

Reader 1: wanting to be popular! To be preferred by everyone!

Reader 3: to be looked upon all the time!

Readers 1, 2 & 3: ALL THE TIME!
(Reader 1 expresses angrily, looking up with arms lifted up. Reader 2 portrays a “guilty” character, looking inward at oneself, almost curling into a ball, shaking head subtly. Reader 3 looking confused, the “why?!” character.)

Reader 2: Deliver US, O God! All these desires!

Reader 3: Desires...Desires...(Music plays slowly after 1st “desire” is said)

(Music continues playing softly in the background. All 3 readers will fall on their knees and remain kneeling)

Reader 1: Save us, Help us O God!

Reader 3: from being afraid all the time!

Readers 1, 2 & 3: FEAR!!! (screams!)

Reader 2: I'm afraid of suffering! Humiliated! Will I be...

Reader 3: (overlaps Reader 2) left alone? Die alone? Forgotten?

Reader 1: I'm so afraid of being wronged by people, thought of as a

Reader 2 & 3: (cuts in) Freak! (pauses for 3 secs) What if...I am being ridiculed and despised?

Reader 1: What if others are being loved more than I? What if others have people who love them so much and I don't?! (looking at light above and shaking her head violently)

Readers 1, 2 & 3: Jesus! Hear us!

Reader 1 & 3: (Starts to stand facing audience at same individual position. Looking up far ahead) Jesus...(pauses for 3 secs) grant me the grace to desire

Reader 2: that others may be esteemed more than I. Holier than I, well, provided that I myself become as holy as I “should”.(Still looking up at the spot light in the center)

Reader 1: (Smiles) I want nothing of the world.

Reader 3: Let them be praised, and chosen (Smiling, saying it excitedly but suddenly pauses) and I?

Reader 1 & 2: be set aside and unnoticed. (smiles and looking far up ahead. Then turns smiles at each other with nodding of the head. In peace.)

Music and light fades
